Do-Now

Learning is a process. A project is a process -the process is the key.

So the point is that it is the "do-now" that one needs to focus upon. If a project were broken down into parts, it can have a focus in each phase. It needs your attention to detail.

While a person learns and gathers the information and gets to understand a point, there is a moment of taking it in, breathing in.

The mandala making monks of Tibet who came from Hubli, Karnataka had this to teach today at the Princeton Center for Yoga and Health.
They are mindful of creating the beauty in the Mandala- they focus on the process.
The process consists of making a draft of the Mandala, using colored sand, pouring it into the cones with holes at the ends. Then you inhale and exhale lightly, settle down by bending into a comfortable position and start tapping the sand onto the design. You orchestrate your hands to move the cone a few millimeters a second to create the pattern- and all this while continuously breathing. This is an ongoing process for 6-8 days to create a beautiful mandala.

The whole point of this process driven activity then is to do a job well and wait for the beauty to come through. The end result may not be a visible product like the Mandala here. It could be a small task taken to it's end, accomplished well.

After creating the mandala, there is a ceremony done to celebrate it's beauty and the aspect of working and accomplishing something together. The monks then let go of the beauty in the Mandala by sweeping the sand up- the work is done and done well. The essence of it is gathered while creating it -it is this essence which we find a common in the doctrine of mindfulness.
It is knowing that what needs to be done is a"do-now". It is the "do-now" that one needs to focus upon.
The rest will follow through.

Ootsav and the bringing together of the community.

This is what the people said via Ootsav! 2015- Of course I support the library! Because people like us do things like this! People came out and supported the effort by the community.  I was quietly surprised when I saw the ambush of the volunteers at the first volunteer meeting at the library. We did not have a clear agenda for the day of (we had one for the meeting). We did not know how and what we would do eventually- but we all knew one thing- we all wanted to give back to the community. To give back to the library in manifold ways, in ways that cannot be quantified.  Paraphrasing Seth Godin- the reason for the existence of donors/ volunteers and non-profits is that we don't know how to solve some problems in the world. Problems that are unprecedented -like the economic recession and what it did to our economy and then to our library. When we move to volunteer and fundraising for a cause, we take risks which don't make profitable sense. This risk basically pu...
